What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars located at the back of the mouth. Typically, adults have four wisdom teeth, one in each quadrant of the mouth. These teeth are called “wisdom teeth” as they usually start to emerge during late adolescence or early adulthood, around the ages of 17 to 25, a time when a person is considered to be wiser and more mature. However, the eruption age can vary among individuals.
While some people have enough space in their jaw to accommodate these teeth without any issues, others may experience problems due to lack of space, leading to impacted wisdom teeth, which may require removal to prevent complications.
Signs and Symptoms of Wisdom Teeth Problems
Experiencing an impacted wisdom tooth can be an excruciating ordeal. Therefore, recognizing the key indicators of wisdom teeth problems becomes crucial for early detection and prompt intervention. Here, we outline the signs and symptoms to watch out for.
Pain and Discomfort
One of the most common symptoms is pain or discomfort in the back of the mouth where the wisdom teeth are located. This pain can vary in intensity and may be persistent or intermittent.
Swelling and Tenderness
Swelling and tenderness in the gums around the area of the impacted wisdom teeth may occur. This can result from inflammation or infection.
Red or Bleeding Gums
Gums around impacted wisdom teeth may appear red, swollen, or bleed easily, especially during brushing or flossing.
Jaw Stiffness
Individuals with problematic wisdom teeth may experience jaw stiffness or soreness, especially when opening and closing their mouth.
Bad Breath
Accumulation of food particles and bacteria around the partially erupted wisdom teeth can lead to bad breath or an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
Crowding and Shifting of Teeth
Impacted wisdom teeth may push against neighbouring teeth, leading to crowding or misalignment of the existing teeth.

How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
The wisdom teeth removal procedure is a common dental surgery aimed at extracting one or more impacted or problematic wisdom teeth. Here’s an overview of the wisdom teeth removal process:
Pre-operative Consultation
Before the surgery, the dentist will conduct a thorough examination of the patient’s mouth, including X-rays, to assess the position and condition of the wisdom teeth. The dentist will also discuss the procedure, explain potential risks, and answer any questions the patient may have.
Anesthesia
To ensure a comfortable and pain-free experience during the procedure, the dentist will administer appropriate anesthesia. Depending on the complexity of the case and the patient’s preference, local anaesthesia, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), or intravenous sedation may be used.
Incision and Tooth Extraction
Once the anaesthesia takes effect, the dentist will make an incision in the gum tissue covering the impacted tooth. If the tooth is partially erupted, it may be gently rocked back and forth to loosen it from the surrounding tissues. In some cases, the tooth may need to be sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal.
Suturing and Gauze Placement
After the wisdom tooth is successfully removed, the dentist will place sutures to close the incision site and promote proper healing. Gauze pads are then placed over the extraction site to control bleeding.
Post-operative Care
The patient will receive detailed post-operative care instructions, including how to manage pain and swelling, how to keep the extraction site clean, and dietary restrictions (such as eating soft foods) during the initial recovery period.
A follow-up appointment will then be scheduled to monitor the healing process and ensure there are no complications.
The Cost of Wisdom Teeth Removal
The cost of wisdom tooth removal depends on the complexity of the extraction.
For a simple extraction of a single wisdom tooth, the cost ranges from AUD $200 to $300 per tooth. If the extraction requires a surgical approach due to impaction or other complications, the cost can be higher, ranging from AUD $400 to $600 per tooth. If all four wisdom teeth need to be removed, the total cost can vary between AUD $1000 to $3000.
It’s best to consult with us to get an accurate estimate based on your specific situation and any additional factors that may affect the cost.
