Root Canal

At Mindarie Quinns Dental Centre, we take pride in providing top-notch root canal treatment, making us the best place to entrust your dental care.

What Is Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure performed to save a severely damaged or infected tooth by removing the infected or inflamed soft tissue inside the tooth, known as the pulp. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues, and when it becomes infected due to deep decay, cracks, repeated dental procedures, or trauma to the tooth, it can cause severe pain and potentially lead to abscess formation.

When to Consider a Root Canal Treatment

Certain common signs and symptoms serve as crucial indicators for the need of a root canal treatment, and being aware of these warning signs can help address potential issues promptly.

Persistent Toothache

We will examine the tooth and take X-rays to determine the extent of the damage and whether a root canal is necessary.

Sensitivity to Hot and Cold

Feeling intense sensitivity or pain when consuming hot or cold foods and beverages, even after removing the stimulus, could indicate a problem with the tooth’s nerve and pulp.

Swelling and Tenderness

Swelling in the gums around the affected tooth, accompanied by tenderness or a small bump (abscess), may be a sign of an infection spreading to the surrounding tissues.

Discolouration of the Tooth

A tooth that has darkened or changed colour compared to the surrounding teeth may indicate internal damage or decay, requiring a root canal assessment.

Prolonged Sensitivity to Pressure

Feeling discomfort or sensitivity when applying pressure to the tooth while chewing or biting is another sign of potential root canal issues.

Recurring Gum Boil

A recurring pimple-like swelling (gum boil) on the gums, often releasing pus or blood, might suggest an infected tooth root requiring treatment.

Loose or Shifting Teeth

In some cases, an infected tooth may cause adjacent teeth to become loose or shift out of alignment.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough for a Successful Root Canal Treatment

Initial Assessment and X-rays

The procedure begins with a thorough dental examination and X-rays to evaluate the tooth’s condition and determine the extent of the damage or infection.

Numbing the Tooth

Local anaesthesia is administered to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the procedure. This numbs the tooth and surrounding tissues, making the treatment virtually painless.

Accessing the Pulp

The dentist creates a small opening in the tooth’s crown to access the infected or inflamed pulp inside the root canal.

Removal of Infected Pulp

Using specialised instruments, the dentist carefully removes the diseased pulp from the root canal and pulp chamber.

Cleaning and Shaping

The root canal is meticulously cleaned and shaped to eliminate any remaining debris, bacteria, or infected tissue.

Filling the Root Canal

The cleaned root canal is then filled with a biocompatible material, typically gutta-percha, to seal the canal and prevent further infection.

Placing a Temporary Filling

A temporary filling is placed in the tooth’s opening to protect the root canal during the healing process.

Dental Crown Placement

In cases where significant tooth structure has been lost, a dental crown may be recommended. A customised dental crown is crafted and placed over the tooth to restore its strength, function, and appearance.

Are There Alternatives to Root Canal Treatment?

Yes, there are alternatives to root canal treatment depending on the dental condition. Tooth extraction is one option for severely damaged or infected teeth, with the possibility of replacing the missing tooth with a dental implant, bridge, or denture.

Additionally, for children with deep decay affecting the pulp, a pulpotomy may be performed, which removes the infected pulp from the crown portion of the tooth while leaving the pulp in the root canal intact.

The choice between root canal treatment and alternatives depends on the specific circumstances, and it is best to consult with us to determine the most suitable approach for your dental health.

What our clients say

Google Review

Have been a client here for over 10 years and highly recommend this practice. Dr Lubinka has been my dentist for 12 years since I moved from the UK. Her professionalism, knowledge, attention to detail and her communication is outstanding. The administrative, support and dental nurse staff here are equally exceptional. Customer focused, positive, flexible and polite. Have never ever considered going anywhere else. Highly recommended.

Thank you to all the staff for being so caring and accommodating for my husband's first visit. Dr Lubinka has set him on a path toward dental health recovery. This practice has even inspired me to visit for a checkup and that’s somewhat miraculous!

Excellent customer service, with friendly and experienced staff! This is so helpful when you have a child who has always been anxious going to the dentist. Dr Master is so professional and composed that I don't even need to go in with my child when she has an appointment. He makes sure that you are completely satisfied with the service you receive and that's at no additional cost to you!

What can you say? Who loves going to the dentist? My experience has been awesome. No pain, no fuss, friendly and professional. Do I want to go again? No. I want to take better care of my teeth. Yet, if I have to go, I definitely will be back here.

I cannot praise Mindarie Quinn’s dental staff highly enough. My son had an accident at school resulting in a chipped tooth, the desk staff were amazing, shifting around appointments to fit him in for emergency treatment. Dr Aron was brilliant. He was calm & gentle with a traumatised boy. Within the hour we were back home with a fixed up-front tooth. This is my usual dentist, and my experiences are always great, but the care we received today in an emergency was so professional and reassuring, I felt the need to leave a review of our experience. Thank you for the incredible treatment we received with you today.

Staff are always super friendly. Really helpful when it comes to dental emergencies. My teeth are forever grateful.

Myself and my children have been seeing Lubinka for years. She is kind, patient, friendly and explains everything very well. My daughter had to have 4 teeth extracted and the procedure went very well because of her trust in Lubinka. The other staff are also lovely. We highly recommend this practice.
