Dental Splint in Mindarie

The dental splints we offer our patients in Mindarie and surrounding areas in Perth are crafted precisely to ensure optimal comfort. Each splint is made from high-quality and durable materials, ensuring long-lasting effectiveness. Once you choose to invest in a dental splint from Mindarie Quinns Dental Centre, you can rest assured that it will provide reliable protection and support for your dental health needs.

Different Types of Dental Splints We Offer

Occlusal Splints

These dental appliances, known as night guards or bite guards, protect teeth from damage caused by bruxism (teeth grinding) or clenching. They are typically worn during sleep and help distribute the forces of grinding across the teeth, preventing wear and reducing muscle strain in the jaw. Occlusal splints can also alleviate symptoms such as headaches and jaw pain associated with bruxism.

Anti-Snoring Dental Splints

Also called mandibular advancement devices (MADs), these anti-snoring dental splints treat snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea. They work by repositioning the lower jaw slightly during sleep, which helps keep the airway open and reduces snoring and breathing interruptions.

Retention Splints

These splints are used to maintain the position of teeth after braces or other similar treatments. They are often removable and help prevent teeth from returning to their original positions. Retention splints can be made from clear plastic materials for aesthetic purposes and are designed to fit perfectly over the teeth while allowing for easy removal and cleaning.

Each type of dental splint serves a specific purpose and is made to address different dental issues. At Mindarie Quinns Dental Centre, our team can check your condition and recommend the most suitable type of dental splint.

Benefits of Using Dental Splints

Dental splints offer several benefits for patients dealing with various dental issues:

Prevention of Tooth Wear and Damage

Dental splints, such as occlusal splints, provide a protective barrier between teeth, preventing the abrasive effects of teeth grinding (bruxism) or clenching. By distributing the force evenly across the teeth, splints help reduce wear and tear on tooth enamel, minimising the risk of fractures and damage to dental restorations.

Reduction of Headaches and Jaw Discomfort

Many individuals with bruxism experience frequent headaches, jaw pain, and facial discomfort due to muscle tension. Dental splints alleviate these symptoms by promoting proper jaw alignment and reducing the strain on facial muscles. This may lead to significant relief from chronic headaches and bruxism-associated jaw discomfort.

Improvement in Sleep Quality for Patients with Sleep Bruxism

Wearing a dental splint can significantly improve sleep quality for patients with sleep bruxism. Splints help reduce sleep disturbances and awakenings at night by preventing teeth grinding and associated noises. This leads to better overall sleep hygiene and improved daytime functioning.

Dental Splint Procedure

Our clinic in Mindarie ensures that the dental splint procedure is carried out carefully and effectively to meet the patient’s needs.

Consultation

The first step is scheduling a consultation with our experienced dentist. During this appointment, our dentist will thoroughly evaluate your dental health. We will discuss your symptoms, such as teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw pain, or other concerns, to determine if a dental splint is the right treatment option for you.

Impressions

Once it’s decided that a dental splint is appropriate, our dentist will take precise impressions of your teeth. This involves using a putty-like material to create moulds of your teeth. These impressions are crucial for crafting a dental splint that aligns perfectly with your dental structure.

Fabrication

Our dental team will fabricate your splint using detailed impressions of your teeth. We use quality materials like acrylic, metal, or composite resin to ensure durability and comfort. The splint is meticulously crafted to fit snugly and comfortably over your teeth, providing optimal protection and therapeutic benefits.

Fitting

You will try on the dental splint during the fitting appointment to ensure a proper fit. Our dentist will adjust it to ensure it fits securely and comfortably. The splint must fit snugly over your teeth to prevent teeth grinding and associated issues.

Instructions for Use

Our team will provide detailed instructions on how to wear and look after your dental splint. Depending on your specific condition, you may need to wear the splint during sleep or throughout the day.

Follow-up Appointments

Regular follow-up appointments are needed to monitor the effectiveness of your dental splint. Our dentist will assess how well the splint functions and may recommend adjustments or replacements as needed. These appointments ensure that your splint provides optimal protection and comfort for your dental health.

How to Care for Your Dental Splints

We offer instructions on how to care for your dental splint to ensure its longevity and effectiveness in treating conditions like bruxism (teeth grinding) and jaw discomfort.

Proper Care and Maintenance

Instructions will be provided to prolong the splint’s lifespan and effectiveness. Following these guidelines ensures that dental splint protects teeth and maintains oral health.

Rinse with Water

After each use, rinse your dental splint thoroughly with lukewarm water to remove saliva and debris. Do not use hot water, as it can distort the splint’s shape.

Brush with a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush

Gently brush your dental splint using a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild, non-abrasive toothpaste. This helps to remove plaque buildup and keeps the splint clean. Avoid using harsh toothpaste or abrasive materials that can scratch the surface of the splint.

Store Your Splint Properly

Store your dental splint in its designated case to protect it from dust, bacteria, and damage when not in use. Keep the case in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, as excessive heat can distort the splint’s shape.

Replace Your Splint When Necessary

Regularly inspect your dental splint for signs of wear, cracks, or damage. If you notice any deterioration or the splint no longer fits properly, contact Mindarie Quinns Dental Centre for evaluation. Depending on the type of splint and your usage, periodic replacement may be necessary to maintain optimal effectiveness.

These simple, caring tips can help ensure your dental splint remains hygienic, comfortable, and effective in managing your dental health.

Dental Splint FAQs

What is a dental splint?

A dental splint is a specifically designed oral device used to treat dental issues like teeth grinding (bruxism) and jaw disorders and protect dental work. It’s typically made from acrylic or plastic and fits over the teeth to support or prevent damage.

Who can benefit from a dental splint?

A dental splint can benefit anyone experiencing teeth grinding, jaw pain, or needing protection for dental restorations. It’s particularly helpful for individuals with bruxism or those undergoing teeth alignment treatment.

What happens if I don't wear a dental splint?

Not wearing a dental splint can lead to increased tooth wear, potential damage to dental restorations, jaw discomfort, and worsening of bruxism symptoms like headaches. It’s essential to wear one as your dentist recommends preventing these issues.

How are dental splints made?

Dental splints are made from impressions of teeth. After taking impressions, the dentist uses acrylic or composite resin to fabricate a splint that fits your teeth precisely.

Who are occlusal splints for?

Occlusal splints are for individuals with teeth grinding (bruxism) or jaw clenching. They help alleviate symptoms, protect teeth from damage, and improve jaw alignment.

How do I know if I'm grinding my teeth?

Signs of teeth grinding include worn-down teeth, jaw pain, headaches (especially in the morning), and a sore jaw upon waking. Our dentist can diagnose teeth grinding and recommend a splint if necessary.

How long will my occlusal splint last?

The lifespan of an occlusal splint depends on usage and care. With proper maintenance and regular dental checkups, it can last several years. However, occasional replacement may be necessary due to wear and tear.

When are occlusal splints worn?

Occlusal splints are typically worn at night to prevent teeth grinding during sleep. Some individuals may wear them daily if they unconsciously clench their teeth.

What are occlusal splints made from?

Occlusal splints are made from acrylic, composite resin, or sometimes hard plastic. These materials are durable, comfortable, and designed to fit your teeth snugly.

How do I clean my dental splint?

After each use, rinse your dental splint daily with lukewarm water. Gently brush it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Store it in its case when not in use to avoid bacteria build-up.

Are dental splints permanent?

Dental splints are not permanent and may need replacement due to wear or changes in dental health. They are designed to be durable but are removable for cleaning and adjustment.

Is a dental splint covered by health insurance?

Coverage for dental splints varies depending on your insurance plan and the reason you need one. Check with your insurance provider to learn your coverage options.

What our patients say

Google Review

Have been a client here for over 10 years and highly recommend this practice. Dr Lubinka has been my dentist for 12 years since I moved from the UK. Her professionalism, knowledge, attention to detail and her communication is outstanding. The administrative, support and dental nurse staff here are equally exceptional. Customer focused, positive, flexible and polite. Have never ever considered going anywhere else. Highly recommended.

Thank you to all the staff for being so caring and accommodating for my husband's first visit. Dr Lubinka has set him on a path toward dental health recovery. This practice has even inspired me to visit for a checkup and that’s somewhat miraculous!

Google Review

Excellent customer service, with friendly and experienced staff! This is so helpful when you have a child who has always been anxious going to the dentist. Dr Master is so professional and composed that I don't even need to go in with my child when she has an appointment. He makes sure that you are completely satisfied with the service you receive and that's at no additional cost to you!

Google Review

What can you say? Who loves going to the dentist? My experience has been awesome. No pain, no fuss, friendly and professional. Do I want to go again? No. I want to take better care of my teeth. Yet, if I have to go, I definitely will be back here.

Google Review

I cannot praise Mindarie Quinn’s dental staff highly enough. My son had an accident at school resulting in a chipped tooth, the desk staff were amazing, shifting around appointments to fit him in for emergency treatment. Dr Aron was brilliant. He was calm & gentle with a traumatised boy. Within the hour we were back home with a fixed up-front tooth. This is my usual dentist, and my experiences are always great, but the care we received today in an emergency was so professional and reassuring, I felt the need to leave a review of our experience. Thank you for the incredible treatment we received with you today.

Google Review

Staff are always super friendly. Really helpful when it comes to dental emergencies. My teeth are forever grateful.

Google Review

Myself and my children have been seeing Lubinka for years. She is kind, patient, friendly and explains everything very well. My daughter had to have 4 teeth extracted and the procedure went very well because of her trust in Lubinka. The other staff are also lovely. We highly recommend this practice.
