What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, medically referred to as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection that impacts the crucial support structures of our teeth, including gums, ligaments, and bones. This prevalent condition can manifest in varying degrees, from mild gum inflammation known as gingivitis to more severe damage involving tissues and bone, termed periodontitis.

If not promptly addressed, gum disease can result in tooth loss and may even have broader implications on overall health.

Causes of Gum Disease

Gum disease can arise due to a combination of factors. Understanding these contributing elements is crucial for maintaining good oral health. Here are some of the primary causes of gum disease:

Poor Oral Hygiene

Insufficient or improper brushing and flossing can lead to the accumulation of plaque on teeth and along the gum line. Over time, this plaque hardens into tartar, providing a breeding ground for harmful bacteria that attack the gums.

Smoking and Tobacco Use

Tobacco products, including smoking and chewing tobacco, significantly increase the risk of gum disease. Smoking weakens the immune system’s ability to combat infections, making gum tissues more susceptible to bacterial attack.

Certain Medications

Certain medications, such as anticonvulsants, calcium channel blockers, and oral contraceptives, can affect gum health by causing an overgrowth of gum tissue (gingival hyperplasia) or reducing saliva flow, increasing the risk of gum disease.

Systemic Health Conditions

Medical conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and immune disorders can compromise gum health and increase susceptibility to gum disease.

Poor Nutrition

A diet lacking essential nutrients, particularly vitamin C, can impair the body’s ability to fight infections and heal gum tissues, contributing to gum disease.

Stress

Chronic stress weakens the immune system, making it harder for the body to ward off infections, including those affecting the gums.

Treatment Options for Gum Disease

Gum disease requires effective treatment to prevent its progression and maintain oral health. Here are some essential treatment options that dental professionals may recommend based on the severity and stage of gum disease:

Professional Dental Cleanings

Regular dental cleanings, also known as prophylaxis, help remove plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth and gums. These cleanings are essential for preventing gum disease and maintaining overall oral health.

Scaling and Root Planing

This non-surgical procedure involves deep cleaning of the teeth and their root surfaces to remove plaque, tartar, and bacterial toxins. Scaling and root planing help reduce gum inflammation and promote gum reattachment to the tooth surfaces.

Gum Surgery

In more advanced cases of gum disease, surgical interventions may be necessary to address pockets of infection and restore damaged gum tissues. Gum surgery options include flap surgery, bone grafts, and tissue grafts.

Antibiotic Therapies

Antibiotics may be prescribed in various forms, such as oral antibiotics, antibiotic mouth rinses, or antibiotic gels applied directly to the affected areas. These medications help control bacterial infection and aid in the healing process.

Lifestyle Modifications

Adopting a healthier lifestyle, including quitting smoking, managing stress, and maintaining a balanced diet, can significantly impact gum disease progression and improve overall oral health.

Ongoing Maintenance

Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are essential for monitoring gum health and preventing the recurrence of gum disease. Your dentist may recommend more frequent visits to closely manage the condition.

Personalised Oral Hygiene

Proper oral hygiene practices, such as brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and using antimicrobial mouthwashes, play a vital role in managing and preventing gum disease.

Nutrition and Gum Health

Dietary choices and nutritional intake play a vital role in influencing gum health and overall oral well-being. What we eat directly impacts the health of our gums and teeth. Here are some ways in which nutrition can affect gum health:

  1. Foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwi, and bell peppers, help support the immune system and collagen production. Collagen is essential for maintaining the integrity of the gum tissues.
  2. Vitamin D is crucial for calcium absorption, which is necessary for strong teeth and bones. Foods high in vitamin D include fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy products.
  3. Dairy products, leafy greens, almonds, and fortified foods are excellent sources of calcium. Consuming enough calcium is essential for maintaining strong teeth and supporting the jawbone.
  4. Foods rich in antioxidants, like green tea, berries, and nuts, help reduce inflammation in the body, including the gums.
  5. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, chia seeds, and flaxseeds, have anti-inflammatory properties and can contribute to gum health.

What our patients say

Google Review

Have been a client here for over 10 years and highly recommend this practice. Dr Lubinka has been my dentist for 12 years since I moved from the UK. Her professionalism, knowledge, attention to detail and her communication is outstanding. The administrative, support and dental nurse staff here are equally exceptional. Customer focused, positive, flexible and polite. Have never ever considered going anywhere else. Highly recommended.

Thank you to all the staff for being so caring and accommodating for my husband's first visit. Dr Lubinka has set him on a path toward dental health recovery. This practice has even inspired me to visit for a checkup and that’s somewhat miraculous!

Excellent customer service, with friendly and experienced staff! This is so helpful when you have a child who has always been anxious going to the dentist. Dr Master is so professional and composed that I don't even need to go in with my child when she has an appointment. He makes sure that you are completely satisfied with the service you receive and that's at no additional cost to you!

What can you say? Who loves going to the dentist? My experience has been awesome. No pain, no fuss, friendly and professional. Do I want to go again? No. I want to take better care of my teeth. Yet, if I have to go, I definitely will be back here.

I cannot praise Mindarie Quinn’s dental staff highly enough. My son had an accident at school resulting in a chipped tooth, the desk staff were amazing, shifting around appointments to fit him in for emergency treatment. Dr Aron was brilliant. He was calm & gentle with a traumatised boy. Within the hour we were back home with a fixed up-front tooth. This is my usual dentist, and my experiences are always great, but the care we received today in an emergency was so professional and reassuring, I felt the need to leave a review of our experience. Thank you for the incredible treatment we received with you today.

Myself and my children have been seeing Lubinka for years. She is kind, patient, friendly and explains everything very well. My daughter had to have 4 teeth extracted and the procedure went very well because of her trust in Lubinka. The other staff are also lovely. We highly recommend this practice.
