Signs of a Dental Abscess

Recognising the signs of a dental abscess is necessary for prompt treatment and prevention of complications. Here are common symptoms to watch for:

Severe Toothache

An intense pain in the affected tooth is a prominent symptom of a dental abscess. The pain may extend to the jawbone, neck, or ear.

Swollen Gums

Tender gums around the affected tooth can be another sign of dental abscess. You may also notice redness or inflammation, a sign of the body responding to an infection.

Sensitivity to Pressure

The tooth may be sensitive to pressure or touch. Chewing or biting down on the affected tooth can exacerbate the pain.

Fever

Sometimes, a fever may develop as the body responds to the infection. General feelings of illness often accompany this.

Bad Breath or Taste

An unpleasant taste or odour in the mouth, despite regular oral hygiene, can indicate the presence of pus from the abscess.

Pus Drainage

If the abscess ruptures, you may notice pus draining into the mouth accompanied by a sudden relief in pain (which can be misleading as the infection is still present and needs treatment).

What Causes a Dental Abscess?

Dental abscesses typically develop due to various oral health issues, including:

Bacterial Infection

The most common cause is bacteria entering the tooth through a cavity or crack, which can lead to infection and abscess formation.

Gum Disease

Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can cause pockets between the gums and teeth, making space for the bacteria to accumulate and lead to abscesses.

Tooth Decay

Untreated cavities allow bacteria to penetrate deep into the tooth, reaching the pulp (innermost part) and causing infection.

Impacted Tooth

When a tooth cannot erupt properly, it can become impacted beneath the gum line, creating conditions ripe for bacterial growth and abscess formation.

Reasons Why You Need to Address Dental Abscess as Soon as Possible

Alleviate Painful Signs and Symptoms

Dental abscesses can cause intense pain, swelling, and discomfort in the mouth and face. Prompt treatment helps alleviate these symptoms, providing immediate relief.

Protect Oral Health

Left untreated, a dental abscess can lead to severe complications like spreading infection, bone loss, and even systemic health issues. Treating the abscess protects your overall oral health.

Prevent the Risk of Fatal Complications

In rare cases, untreated dental abscesses can lead to severe infections that may spread to other parts of the body, potentially causing life-threatening conditions such as sepsis. Timely treatment reduces this risk significantly.

Prevent Irreversible Damage and Costly Tooth Replacements

Addressing a dental abscess early can prevent the infection from damaging the tooth beyond repair. This reduces the likelihood of needing extensive and costly treatments like root canals or tooth extractions.

Treatments We Offer for a Dental Abscess

Draining the Abscess

When necessary, we carefully drain the abscess to relieve pressure and discomfort. This helps remove the pus and reduce swelling.

Root Canal Therapy

We offer root canal therapy for abscesses affecting the tooth’s inner pulp. This procedure involves removing infected tissue, cleaning the root canal, and sealing it to prevent reinfection, aiming to save the natural tooth.

Extraction

If the tooth is severely damaged and cannot be saved, extraction may be recommended. This prevents the spread of infection to other teeth and tissues.

Medications

We prescribe antibiotics to eliminate the infection and reduce inflammation. Pain relievers may also be suggested to manage discomfort during the healing process.

These treatments are suggested to our patients based on their needs. We do our best to save your tooth and cure the abscess immediately.

What our patients say

Google Review

Have been a client here for over 10 years and highly recommend this practice. Dr Lubinka has been my dentist for 12 years since I moved from the UK. Her professionalism, knowledge, attention to detail and her communication is outstanding. The administrative, support and dental nurse staff here are equally exceptional. Customer focused, positive, flexible and polite. Have never ever considered going anywhere else. Highly recommended.

Thank you to all the staff for being so caring and accommodating for my husband's first visit. Dr Lubinka has set him on a path toward dental health recovery. This practice has even inspired me to visit for a checkup and that’s somewhat miraculous!

Google Review

Excellent customer service, with friendly and experienced staff! This is so helpful when you have a child who has always been anxious going to the dentist. Dr Master is so professional and composed that I don't even need to go in with my child when she has an appointment. He makes sure that you are completely satisfied with the service you receive and that's at no additional cost to you!

Google Review

What can you say? Who loves going to the dentist? My experience has been awesome. No pain, no fuss, friendly and professional. Do I want to go again? No. I want to take better care of my teeth. Yet, if I have to go, I definitely will be back here.

Google Review

I cannot praise Mindarie Quinn’s dental staff highly enough. My son had an accident at school resulting in a chipped tooth, the desk staff were amazing, shifting around appointments to fit him in for emergency treatment. Dr Aron was brilliant. He was calm & gentle with a traumatised boy. Within the hour we were back home with a fixed up-front tooth. This is my usual dentist, and my experiences are always great, but the care we received today in an emergency was so professional and reassuring, I felt the need to leave a review of our experience. Thank you for the incredible treatment we received with you today.

Google Review

Staff are always super friendly. Really helpful when it comes to dental emergencies. My teeth are forever grateful.

Google Review

Myself and my children have been seeing Lubinka for years. She is kind, patient, friendly and explains everything very well. My daughter had to have 4 teeth extracted and the procedure went very well because of her trust in Lubinka. The other staff are also lovely. We highly recommend this practice.
